Australian, Lord Brent Dorrington took out the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland over the weekend, in the icy waters of Thurso East, taking down New Zealand’s Jay Quinn in fun 3-foot surf. Brent is known more as a free surfer who is fearless when it comes to big heavy waves so it is great to see him break out of that mold and win a major ASP event. The waves for the event were awesome with the surf getting up to 8 feet during the week.
The final was a low scoring affair with Brent having a winning total of 9.0 out of a possible over Jay Quinns 7.66 . The result earn Dozza, as he is affectionately known, $20 000 and 3000 One World Ratings points. Brent Dorrington has also taken the lead in the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series with Adam Melling in second, the winner of the series will bank $50 000 for the series!
I hate to say it but it was unfortunately a shocking affair for the South Africans once again. Last Years winner, Royden Bryson had visa problems once again and missed the event. No excuses this time guys, it was a perfect right hander, 4-6 foot, made for South Africans!
Travis Logies injury is not helping matters, he is one of the older guys that can pull the other South Africans together and without people like him with experience around the younger guys can fell a little lost.
The good news is that Bells beach Starts this week and the guy that South African surfing is riding on, Jordy Smith is on form and ready to win! With a solid swell predicted for the start of the event, things could get wrapped up pretty quick. Normally when South African Surfing has a slump like it is having right now, it is followed by something big, so yes we can expect Jordy to win Bells!
