For 13 years the Mr Price Pro has brought world-class surfing to South African shores, annually attracting the who’s who of professional surfing from across the globe and the 2012 edition of the Mr Price Pro Ballito was no different.
With gorgeous weather for the majority of the week, the event saw a record number of beach-goers flooding Willards Beach to catch a glimpse of the world’s best in action.
Despite a smaller surf forecast the North Coast packed a punch behind its beach break conditions and with variable winds throughout the week, surfers would spend their days flying above the lip as the world’s finest aerialists came into their own putting on an air show of note all week long.
With 96 surfers from 19 countries represented, spectators were treated to high performance surfing at its best as surfers unleashed an array of new school maneuvers and were rewarded with excellent to near perfect scores.
After five days of action packed competition, just two men remained and an almighty clash between a regular and a goofy footer saw Australian born, Irish surfer Glenn Hall walk away with the biggest win of his career defeating American surfer Nathaniel Curran in the Final.
While the action did not slow down in the water, the Mr Price Pro Ballito Beach festival provided an exciting combination of cultural, retail, lifestyle and sports entertainment from an amateur to a professional level. With everything from skateboarding to BMX, Film Night and the most explosive lineup of South African music talent at the Free Music Concerts on the Beach at Salt Rock, the Mr Price Pro Ballito further cemented its status as the biggest surf, beach and lifestyle event on the African continent.
