Greg Emslie blog:Contests can make you surf better
|
|
Through all my years of surfing I have found contest surfing definitely can help with your free surfing.
This year, since I have retired from the Pro Circuit, I found myself not surfing as well as I wanted, still looking to push myself and try new things. Granted I have been messing around with different designs and concentrating on one big maneuver rather than linking waves smoothly.
This is all good and fun but there is nothing like linking a wave from start to finish smoothly with big turns and good timing and thinking to yourself, there is not much more I could do on that wave! This is where I feel contest surfing helps you; it forces you to surf well out of competitive drive.
Two weekends ago I was surfing in the Mr Price Western Province Open, and there were some big names in the event so I needed to be on top form if I was to win. I had not been feeling great leading up to the event, however when I hit the water this changed, the competitive drive kicked in and I found myself surfing pretty well.
Then by the time the semi-finals came I was on top form and surfing great. This has continued over into my free surfs, this last week I have been loving my surfs because that contest got me surfing well again.
I have seen this happen time and time again, especially on the World Tour. Kelly Slater will arrive at an event after playing golf for a month and not surfing at all! Although his surfing is looking good in the early rounds (that’s ‘cause he’s Kelly), by the time he has finished winning the final he is untouchable! His level has gone through the roof!
My point being that I know heaps of guys who surf great but don’t want to surf contests, that’s fine, each man for themselves, however I bet if they did the odd club contest their level of surfing in the free surfs would improve.
Most good elderly surfers around are competitive, it has kept them young and fighting.
So get your board, your competitive spirit, as well as your A-game and lets get out there!
