Catlike Thieves earn spot at Mr Price Pro concert
|
 |
It’s official – Durban band Catlike Thieves pocketed the coveted first place at the Mr Price Pro Ballito Playoffs at the eBandla Hotel in Ballito on Friday night, June 4!
They’ll be the first to take the stage at the legendary Rock Night at Salt Rock Beach on July 10 and jam with some of South Africa’s class acts including the likes of Prime Circle, Flash Republic, City Bowl Mizers, Dirty Skirts and the Pixie Bennett Band.
Fifteen bands - Catlike Thieves, the Blake Roberts Band, Red Light Stereo, MadLove, Fruit + Veggies, Small Town Heroes, Kinlock, Forthlock, Sheepdown, Portrait of Sound, Grounded 4 Life, Avade, Detour to Mary, the Stellas and Non Chalant – fought it out on Friday night.
According to judge Neil Comfort, standards were high with very little between the top three bands – Catlike Thieves, Sheepdown and Avade. Catlike Thieves came out tops not only thanks to their unique and explosive acoustic/rock mix, but their energy, use of the stage and amazing connection with an appreciative audience.
Catlike Thieves comprises Shane on vocals and acoustic guitar, Justin on lead guitar and vocals, Gareth on bass guitar and vocals and Philip on drums. The band describes its music as “riverside rock” – an eclectic mix of old-school hard rock, funk-blues and punk. Although Catlike Thieves started out as an acoustic band, other influences – from AC/DC, Incubus and Yellowcard to Greenday, New Found Glory and even the Beach Boys - surfaced during the past two years. “We play what comes out. We don’t stick to a specific genre,” explained front man Shane.
Catlike Thieves has already recorded a four track EP, played with some of SA’s top acts and has songs on all the popular campus radio stations. At present, they are working on a debut album.
“This is what we want to do for life because we love it. We’re not an image, but a crowd band – we just want to party!” explained Shane after the band completed its set.
The Mr Price Pro Ballito Play Off marks the beginning of one of the country’s biggest celebrations of big waves and big sound – the Mr Price Pro Ballito which takes place between July 2 and 11. Because last year’s Mr Price Pro Ballito Music Concert brought in a 7000-strong crowd, Mr Price and the KwaDukuza municipality decided it was time to up the ante, starting with this weekend’s battle of the bands.
This year, there will be two nights of seaside sound - an Acoustic Night featuring the likes of Ard Matthews, Nibs van der Spuy and Farryl Purkis on July 9 followed by the Rock Night which will see Catlike Thieves give new meaning to the name of the venue – Salt Rock!
