Greg Emslie's blog - surfing at its best
|
 |
Sunday, July 18 2010 saw the Billabong Pro Jbay finishing in fine style, as records were broken. South African Jordy Smith blitzed the final, taking down on-form surfer and Tour rookie, Australia’s Adam Melling.
Jordy Smith became the first South African to win a World Tour event and in doing so he has taken number one spot in the world ahead of Taj Burrow and Kelly Slater! Jordy has been in amazing form throughout this event and was the crowd favourite. This was the biggest crowd I have seen at JBay and they were blowing vuvuzelas, screaming and going crazy with every turn the South African phenom performed. Jordy's two scores in the final were a 9.03 and an 8.9 giving him a combined winning total of 17.83 out of a possible 20!
Jordy showed us in this event that he really wants a world title, and in his sem-final against Bede Burbidge, he was needing a combination of scores to win, and with two quick waves and committed surfing, the South African suddenly found himself in the final! This is the kind of fight back that makes a world champion!
Adam Melling came into this event in serious trouble being last on the ratings in his rookie year. Wow, was this guy seriously focused and pumped for this event or what? From his round one win I had his new fans asking me, who is this guy, where does he come from? He won the hearts of the South African crowds with his super smooth, powerful and fast surfing.
Adams’ fine form saw him dispose of many of the world’s top surfers before meeting serious world title contender, Taj Burrow in the semi-finals and help Jordy Smith with a healthy world title lead. Adam surfed a really great heat against Taj with precision surfing and superb wave selection taking down Taj as the rookie advanced into his first World Tour event final!
Adams second place finish to Jordy Smith has rocketed him into 19th position in the world and looks certain to make the 32 man cut after the Billabong Pro Tahiti. As usual this event was one of big upsets seeing the likes of Kelly Slater and Andy Irons being taken out by South African giant killer Sean Holmes! Sean was surfing great and his wave selection is unbeatable and he has the big names rattled!
Travis Logie finished 17th after losing an extremely close heat against Adrian Buchan. Travis is now lying 30th on the World Tour and will need a decent result in Tahiti to stay in the Top 32 as the top 45 will be cut to 32 after the Tahitian event. Shaun Joubert and Dale staples did not disappoint although they both lost in round two. These two guys gave it their all with some great surfing and I am sure the experience they gained from receiving a wild card into this event will go a long way!
This was one of the best and most well organised events I have attended and the webcasts were great. The crowds on the Beach where the biggest I have seen at the Billabong Pro Jbay and with the event running in the first four days with great waves and awesome weather, along with the South African favourite winning, will go down in the history books as one of the best ever! Let’s hope Jordy can carry his confidence and focus and bring home a world title!
