BALLITO DELIVERS FOR SOUTH AFRICA’S BEST

Wednesday July 8, 2010 - Big names dropped as conditions turned on at Surfers Beach in Ballito this morning, the flawless two-meter surf producing some benchmark scores as well as unlikely eliminations from the 5 Star Mr Price Pro today.
Among the biggest of the day’s casualties was World No. 16 Taylor Knox (USA) as well as former ASP World Tour campaigner Greg Emslie (EL).
Both surfers were among the favourites to lift the 2010 trophy but were disappointed to finish equal 49th today.
While Knox and Emslie left the beach with heavy hearts, it was Durban’s Travis Logie who was grinning from ear to ear after two fantastic performances today.
Riding some of the best barrels of the morning, Logie snatched a significant victory over Shane Thorne (Bluff), Greg Emslie (EL) and local charger Allan Johns (Ballito) posting an excellent 8.17(out of ten) as his top scoring ride.
“That’s the best I’ve ever surfed Ballito,” Logie said after winning his round of 48 heat. “I was so stoked I was in the first heat because I knew it would be the best conditions of the day. It’s perfectly round out there and some of the easiest barrels to ride.”
Advancing into the round of 24, Logie went on to better his performance posting a near perfect 9.00 for a series of lethal backhand snaps, posting a 15.67 (out of 20.00) heat total to defeat Frankie Obherholzer (Scott) and Anthony Walsh (AUS).
“I had two really good heats today, the second one was even better and the waves were really tricky so I am surprised it was such a good heat,” Logie said. “My board feels really good under my feet and it’s actually my second choice board ‘cos I snapped my favourite board this morning.”
Twenty-one-year old Casey Grant (Scottburgh) proved unforgettable in the classic beach break conditions, his critical top-to-bottom surfing and radical frontside aerial to end off his wave, earned him the highest wave score of the day, a 9.33 (out of ten).
“The waves are fun and that was a good looking wave,” Grant said, “it had a good clean wall so I tried to do a nice carve and when it started to close-out I just had to go big. I went for the biggest air I could go for and somehow I pulled it off.”
Defeating 2005 PST Champion Shane Thorne and Kyle Lane, Grant ensured he was through to the round of 16 with the highest heat score of the day a 16.33.
“I was thinking about all the top guys that went out today and it actually added to my confidence out there,” Grant said. “It’s unlucky for them but better fur us because now it makes it easier to get through some heats.”
Jordy Smith (Durban) continued his winning ways, keeping fellow Top 45 Campaigner Chris Davidson (AUS) on the back foot with an early lead. The enormous World No. 2 surfer obliterating every wave he rode to bring home victory with 7.00 and 6.83 scores.
“Davo is one of the better surfers in the contest and it’s always good to get a pre- warm up with a guy who’s on your tour,” Smith said. “There were a few upsets today with Taylor and Greg but it happens, you can’t win them all. The waves are so good that anyone can get through.”
Perennial Pro Surf Tour campaigner Warwick Wright (Dbn) looked powerful on his backhand, stringing together a series of impressive re-entries to score an 8.17 (out of ten). Wright defeated Daniel Redman (Umloti), eliminating Shaun Joubert (Mossel Bay).
Damien Fahrenfort (CT) looked much more comfortable on his own equipment. After riding Jordy Smith’s board yesterday due to an airline baggage complication, Fahrenfort produced a smooth, loose performance to secure a convincing win over Royden Bryson (EL) and Dale Staples (St Francis).
Also earning their places into the round of 16 were Rudy Palmboom (Bluff) who advanced ahead of Ricky Basnett (Bluff), David Weare (Dbn) who took first over Simon Fish (EL) and Klee Strachan who advanced ahead of Brendon Gibbens.
The next call will take place at 07H00 tomorrow.
